Bill Barry is a book publishing veteran with more than 40 years of senior management experience, bill Barry has served as a sustainability advisor to MacmIllan Publishers since 2009.
Bill was President of DK Publishing USA (a division of Pearson’s Penguin Group) and before that was President & COO of IDG Books/Hungry Minds before its sale to John Wiley & Sons. At Random House—the world’s largest trade book publisher—his roles ranged from SVP Corporate Development, Chief Purchasing Officer, and SVP Distribution Operations and Services. At Bantam Doubleday Dell, Bill was SVP Operations overseeing Production, Procurement, and Distribution.
On the editorial side, Bill has negotiated hundreds of book acquisitions and published authors as diverse as Wal*Mart founder Sam Walton and Pope Benedict XVI. Bill was VP/Deputy Publisher of Doubleday and had previously been Managing Editor. Earlier at Doubleday he worked as a Corporate Analyst in the company’s Book Club, Retail, and Book Manufacturing divisions.
He has talked about book publishing on ABC’s 20/20, BBC World Service, CBS, NBC radio, CNN, PBS’s The Charlie Rose Show, and in The New York Times, The (London) Times, El Pais, and other media.
He is currently concluding a long-term consultation—commenced in 2009--for Macmillan’s CEO on Sustainability and Business Partnerships in addition to his independent work brokering the sale of publishing companies, executive compensation counsel, and literary management/rights administration for author clients. He has attended CSE’s Certified Sustainability (CSR) Practitioner Training and has addressed Resolute Forest Product’s environmental coordinators' meeting, the Sustainable Forestry Initiative’s annual meeting, and the Gravure Association of the Americas’ environmental workshop. He also participates in the recently formed AAP environmental task force.
