Publication of ONIX 3.1 revision 1 [EDItEUR]
“EDItEUR has published ONIX 3.1 revision 1. The updated Specification and other documents and XML tools are available from the EDItEUR website. A short paper listing the improvements included in ONIX 3.1.1 is available. The most important allows the expression of EU-style opt-outs from the copyright exception applying to non-research uses of text and data mining (e.g., for training large language models) with collateral material. It has been possible to express such opt-outs on product content for some time, but revision 1 extends this to long descriptions, tables of contents, reading guides, cover images and other resources which are included in or linked from Block 2 of ONIX. The other additions enable identifiers for literary prizes, and a textual expression of the copyright statement in addition to the structured copyright owner data. Version 3.1.1 is fully backwards compatible with the previous 3.1 release – any correctly-constructed ONIX 3.1 remains valid under 3.1.1, and most ONIX 3.0 files can be easily converted to 3.1. […] These changes were circulated to the ONIX national user groups and to members of the ONIX international steering committee for discussion. The steering committee ratified the changes at its meeting during the London Book Fair (March 2024).”
Catalog Form & Function Interest Group Discussion [ALA Core]
“The Catalog Form & Function Interest Group invites you to an open discussion Thursday, April 4 from 12:00-1:00pm CT about the purpose of the group and a proposed name change. What do we mean when we talk about Catalog Form and Function? Based on the history of the group, we don’t talk about the catalog in isolation, we talk about discovery systems, and the group purpose should reflect that. Join us to discuss past and potential presentation topics and a proposal to change the group’s name and purpose.”
