In this session, NISO representatives will explain how standards are developed as well as what other deliverables (like Recommended Practices) NISO working groups produce. Following that presentation, an open forum will be held to give participants a chance to identify and discuss pressing issues they face in their workplaces and how new standards might help streamline their operations. The organizers of this session hope to walk away with new ideas for potential NISO work items around which working groups can be formed and real progress can be made.

ACRL’s Science and Technology Section
"The Role of Metadata Standards in Scientific Data Publishing: Part One"
Dallas Convention Center Room: D168
Enhancing access to scientific data sets has become a major goal of research funding efforts. Unless better care is taken to standardize the metadata and technical descriptors used to make them discoverable, there is a concern that these data sets might disappear within the corpus of "grey literature." Join us as our discussion provides valuable and timely input from publishers, vendors and librarians to the standards development organizations. Cosponsored by STS Publisher/Vendor Relations Discussion Group and STS Subject & Bibliographic Access Committee.
Speaking: Todd Carpenter on the ICSTI/CODATA Scientific Data Citation initiative.

RDA Update Forum
Sponsored by the The Cataloging and Metadata Management Section (CaMMS) and the RDA Conference Forums and Programs Task Force (TF)
1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Dallas Convention Center - Room C146
Panelists will outline key cataloging changes related to RDA and steps being taken in preparation for implementation sometime after January 2013. Although there is at least a year before wide scale implementation of RDA, changes are already impacting workflow and data exchange. In an effort to economize on speakers and room space and to add emphasis to this topic CaMMS is foregoing its Friday Forum to join with the TF in presenting this RDA Forum. Scheduled presenters include: Beacher Wiggins (Library of Congress), Linda Barnhart (Chair PCC), Glenn Patton (OCLC), John Attig (JSC update), Sally McCallum (MARBI) and Troy Linker (ALA Publishing).
