ALCTS Electronic Resources Interest Group
ERMing for a Consortium: Are We There Yet?
Time: 10:30 am - 12:00 pm
Location: Disneyland Hotel, Adventure Room

Are there successful Electronic Resources Management systems (ERMs) implementation models for consortia? What are vendors doing to improve their systems to be deployed at the consortium level? What works? What doesn't work? What needs to be done for libraries to explore this option to integrate and implement an ERM at the consortium level? What is the needed functionality? The program provides three perspectives on the topic: the vendor, the consortium, and the librarian. Speakers include:

  • Jeff Aipperspach, Product Manager, Serials Solutions
  • Ted Fons, Director of Customer Services, Innovative Interfaces Inc.
  • Rick Burke, Executive Director, Statewide California Electronic Library Consortium
  • Tommy Keswick, Membership Services Coordinator, Statewide California Electronic Library Consortium
  • Angela Riggio, Head of Digital Collection Management, Digital Collections Services, UCLA
RUSA-STARS Program

Time: 1:30pm - 3:30pm
Location: Disneyland Hotel, Adventure Room

Todd Carpenter, NISO Managing Director, will join this event to discuss the current state of ILL standards and activities.

LITA Standards Interest Group
Program on Identifiers
Time: 4-6 pm
Location: Anaheim Convention Center, 304 D

  • John Kunze from the California Digital Library on "Persistent Identifier Principles and Practice
This talk will describe the goals of persistent identifiers and factors affecting the choice of an in-house identifier standard. Practical aspects of designing services around identifiers will also be explored, with examples based on ARK identifiers.
  • Regina Reynolds from the Library of Congress on "The Linking ISSN: bridging the past, linking to the future"
One of the most significant aspects of the revised ISSN standard (ISO 3297: 2007) is the linking ISSN, a mechanism that collocates the ISSN assigned to the separate medium versions of continuing resources by designating one of these ISSN to function as the linking ISSN. This presentation will review the development of this collocating mechanism, the needs it is expected to meet, and its forthcoming implementation. Also included will be an overview of emerging uses of the ISSN and anticipated uses of the linking ISSN in today's electronic environment.
  • Todd Carpenter, Managing Director of NISO on "NISO Update"
In February 2008, NISO was assigned the responsibility of Secretariat for ISO's TC 46 SC 9, the sub committee responsible for Identificaiton and Description. This group manages the ISSN, ISBN, ISTC, ISNI, DOI and other identifiers in the publishing and library community. This presentation will cover ongoing work of SC 9 and NISO's role as Secretariat.

ALCTS Networked Resources and Metadata Interest Group
IT Support in Cataloging Departments
Time: 8:00am-10:00am (business meeting from approx. 9:15-10:00)
Location: Disneyland Hotel, North Exhibit Hall, Meeting Room B

In March of this year, Erin Stalberg from NCSU posed some questions on the metadata librarians list about the existence of organizational models which combine both metadata competencies and MARC competencies. The questions elicited few answers and much interest. We would like to devote our meeting time to an open discussion of issues such as technical competencies, metadata competencies, workflows which accommodate both Marc and other metadata schemas, and ways in which these skillsets can be brought into our departments and have them support all of our workflows.

The discussion leaders include: Erin Stalberg, Head, Metadata and Cataloging, North Carolina State University Libraries; Myung-Ja ("MJ") Han, Metadata Librarian, University of Illinois at Urbana-Chamapign; and Christopher Cronin, Head of Digital Resources Cataloging, University of Colorado at Boulder Libraries Cataloging & Metadata Services Department.

Louise Ratliff, Chair of NRMIG has posted information on this informal forum to the Metadata Blog (http://blogs.ala.org/nrmig.php ). Comments, questions and concerns about how your organization is blending traditional and new metadata skillsets and workflows are all welcome, and they will be collected and included in the discussion at ALA Annual.

Serials Standards Update Forum
Time: 10:30 AM-Noon
Location: Hilton Anaheim, Pacific Ballroom A

The Serials Standards Update Forum, held at American Library Association conferences, presents the latest news on developments affecting continuing resources management. The session is presented by the ALCTS Continuing Resources Section, CRS Standards Committee and sponsored by Swets.

At the 2008 Annual Conference, the forum will feature identifiers. Distinguished speakers will highlight the importance of identifiers in managing and accessing continuing resources and two specific identifiers:

  • Linking ISSN which groups versions of a resource, aiding in discovery and use.
    http://www.issn.org/files/active/0/PRESS%20RELEASE_ISSN-L.pdf
  • Institutional identifiers, designed to streamline resource acquisition and facilitate
access to electronic resources. Institutional identifiers are being studied by the NISO I2 working group, building on initiatives such as Ringgold's Identify and OCLC's WorldCat Registry. http://www.niso.org/workrooms/i2

Speakers:
  • Don Chvatal (Ringgold, Inc)
  • Francoise Pelle (International ISSN Centre)
  • Regina Romano Reynolds (Library of Congress)

ALCTS CRS Costs in Libraries Interest Group
Pricing Book and Journal Backlist Content as an Electronic Resource
Time: 4:00-5:30 pm
Location: Anaheim Convention Center, Room 221 A

As electronic resources are becoming the format of choice in many libraries, publishers are retrodigitizing older content previously available only in print. Publishers will share their approaches and concerns, while a librarian will represent the library's perspective of needs in models for providing and pricing backlist content.

  • Rick Anderson, Assoc. Dir. for Scholarly Resources & Collections, University of Utah, Marriott Library
  • Adam Chesler, Assistant Director, Library Relations and Customer Service, American Chemical Society
  • Heather Ruland Staines, Global eProduct Manager SpringerLink

We will leave time at the end for an update from Judy Luther, President, Informed Strategies, on SERU (A Shared Electronic Resource Understanding), published as part of NISO's Recommended
Practice series.
